words that sing
Words have always been important to me. I love reading, writing, listening to them, thinking about the reactions they provoke (or don’t). Why one person’s response differs from someone else’s. Knowing when to use them in which way, and being able to adapt my style accordingly, is an essential skill and one I love practising.
Simplifying complexity is something I particularly enjoy, writing accessibly on a technical subject for the lay reader for example, or distilling the essence of a lengthy report into a short brochure or executive summary.
I’ve never specialised in a particular sector though in recent years the majority of my copywriting work has been in IT/telecoms and I’m as used to addressing high-level audiences with white papers and corporate brochures as I am creating business-to-business brochures and direct mail or writing for websites and interactive systems.
And much as I like being involved at the beginning of projects, I’m just as used to being given a late and woolly brief, picking up a client draft to edit/rewrite or writing to a pre-agreed copy platform. It’s what keeps me on my toes!
